File Size

Adding an image to a web page is fairly simple. What you need to be careful of is the file size. Many older digital cameras create gigantic image files that way too big for a website.

So what should the file size be? Most images should be under 100 kilobytes (kb). I recommend 500 (kb) as the maximum. The Publc Action logo (top of this website) image file is under 21kb and has the dimensions of 296 pixels wide and 79 pixel in height.

Resize your image before adding it to a web page.

Check the size of your image file before adding it to a web page. The video below details how you can use the GNU Image Manipulation Program to check the file size, and reduce it, it need be.

The GNU Image Manipulation Program is free software, and it runs of almost every operating system. The download page for the free program is here.
